Volunteer stories

Di Herbert has been involved with Dress for Success New Plymouth for two years, mostly in a volunteer capacity. Read about her experience.

"I have had the fantastic opportunity to work with this organisation and at an activity I really enjoy.

"Volunteering is a meaningful and rewarding experience especially when it is about empowering women on their path to financial independence.  I have learnt and developed new skills while carrying out a wide variety of tasks including:

  • Office administration

  • Assisting clients

  • Becoming a personal stylist by helping clients choose a complete work appropriate outfit that they feel comfortable and confident in for a forthcoming interview or new job

  • Sorting and arranging clothing by sizes and type, and managing clothing racks

  • Sourcing clothes, shoes, makeup and accessories

  • Helping with publicity drives and fundraising events

"I have met new people and made connections, built new friendships and lasting relationships that I may not have otherwise had.   I have gained invaluable experience working with others, learning about the organisation and seeing first hand how a non-profit operates.   I enjoy the challenge of dealing with a range of situations and being part of a team.

"Talking to the clients and helping them to feel great about themselves has been one of the more satisfying things I have done.

"They feel proud of the way they can present themselves for a job interview or work attendance.   This is where the real satisfaction is and it comes from seeing the look of pride and pleasure on the clients’ faces."
